AMISH PEOPLE

Amish people are anti-modernist religious group, Christians. A priest whose name is Jakop Amman favored a stronger church discipline so, he founded this group in 1690s. This group’s name was derived from his name. Amish people give importance to modesty and obedience to God. Although they spread all over the world, they mostly live in North America. In fact, almost all Amish can speak English and Pennsylvania Dutch but they prefer speaking Pennsylvania Dutch with each other.
These people’s aspects of life are affected deeply by traditional rules which are known as Ordnung. Ordnung affects their life from dress to hair, from farming to education. Ordung rules give importance to church and family relationships. In addition, these rules must be obeyed by every member of the Amish community.

5. Performing military service

Family Life

Family is the most important social unit in the Amish culture. Children are not burdens, they are gifts from God. So, families with seven to ten children are common. Parents are involved in their children’s activities. They play and read together in the evenings. Fathers and sons work outside of the home while mothers and daughters work at home.

    Education System

Their formal education is until eight grade and they educate their children only at their private schools. They think this education is enough to be an Amish. After school, boys become farmers; carpenters like their fathers and girls become housewives.  Their teacher is usually young unmarried woman. Their education concentrates on the basic reading, writing, geography and math.

 Their Clothes

Women wear long dark colored clothes covered with a cape and apron. They never cut their hair and they don’t wear any jewelry. If the woman is married, she wears a white cape. If she is single, she wears a black cape.

Men usually wear dark colored suits. They never wear belts, and mustache, because mustache is related to military. Young men are clean shaved before marriage, and married men grow bears after marriage, because beards are marks of adult Amish men.

Health care and problems

Amish people use modern medical services like us. But, they don’t want health and social insurance from the state. They help each other to pay medical expenses. In addition, they take care of their own members, so, they don’t have retirement communities or nursing homes. But, as they only marry among themselves, genetic disorders are very common in this society.

Their attitudes towards technology

Amish people reject having cars, electricity which is provided by a power company, tractors, TVs, telephones, airplanes and computers. The reason is not that they are sinful. It is that these modern inventions can have a bad effect on their life. These inventions can create inequality, cause vanity, proud, showing off their statues, power and wealth. Also, these inventions provide access to world. So, they can lead to many temptations and the deterioration of family life. But, they can use telephones and cars as long as they don’t own them. Instead of owning cars, they can own buggies, too.

In addition, they allow electricity generated by solar panels. But, If electricity is provided by a power company, they don’t use it. Their refrigerators, water heaters, stoves, lamps work with gas power and electricity generated by solar panels.
